The Ice Cream Artworks are inspired by the illustrative style of the early 20th Century, especially the work of artist Coles Phillips, known for his stylish images and signature use of negative space. In 1908 he launched his “Fadeaway Girl” style used in advertisements and magazine covers. In the Brighton Folk series the images become more detailed, with greyscale instead of skin tone and muted colour backgrounds.
